Hand-held stere­o­scopes are among the most impor­tant and wide­spread forms of antique stereo­scop­ic view­ers. From the first stereo view­ers for daguerreo­types of the 1850s to com­pact fold­ing view­ers for cel­lu­loid stereo slides in the 1940s, they pro­vid­ed gen­er­a­tions of users with a win­dow into the three-dimen­sion­al world. They range from inex­pen­sive paper view­ers to fine­ly craft­ed lux­u­ry instru­ments. This sec­tion fea­tures antique hand-held stere­o­scopes from many mak­ers and periods.
